It'll Be Alright (no it won't)
We can screw up our lives and our relationships so many ways….Sometimes it’s fixable, sometimes not.
Sometimes we think we’re being cool when we’re really just being stupid. But at the time, no one could tell you that. Opportunities come our way that may never come again, but we often don’t see it at the time. Or we’re too timid, or too self-centered to act on it. Ultimately when you’ve been out there (in the cold cruel world) long enough, most of us just want to find, or hold on to, a home….our home.
Sometimes that’s not as easy as it sounds. How many times have you walked away from something good, so you could try something that you thought might be better? Has someone done that to you? It seems like there will always be another chance, and then, it strikes you: Maybe it won’t.
‘First Last Dance’ is about all the girls I had a crush on over the years (especially in high school), but never knew them as anything except friends. What might have been…..
’Moonwatcher’ is about that romance with someone who lives far away, maybe it’s someone you’re not supposed to be with…but either way, there are barriers.
‘Dismiss Yourself’ is something I wrote to cheer up a female friend who was in an abusive relationship. Linda Terrel , my friend who sings harmony on many of the songs, took the lead here. She loves this song, and sings it with that nice little edge that it needs.
‘Ivory Tower’ speaks to the all too human tendency to see a relationship through idealistic eyes, and doing that makes it hard to except when it’s really time to end it.
‘Children Playing’ is not about children, it’s about adults trying to learn to ‘play’ together as lovers.
‘Find Your Way Home’ is about going too far away from who you are, and trying to get back.
‘7 Different Ways’ is every mother/father’s worst nightmare , when they try to answer the question ‘Do you know what your teenager is doing right now?’
I’m sure you could have figured that stuff out, but every song has other possible contexts…..and hence may mean something different to
you. But that gives you a little peek at what I was thinking when the words were written….. JB
